Foreign body sensation can occur in various organs and parts of the body: throat, nose, eye, ear, anus, vagina. In this case, the sensation may be false, there is no foreign object, and the subjective feeling of discomfort is associated with irritation of nerve endings during inflammation, tissue hypertrophy, microtrauma, and neurosis. To make sure that there is no foreign object, a visual and endoscopic examination is performed, as well as additional instrumental diagnostics. Treatment is prescribed in accordance with the cause of the perceived discomfort (medication, instillations, physiotherapy, psychotherapy).
Sensation of a foreign body in the eye
It occurs when the receptors of the conjunctiva and cornea of the eyeball are irritated. Most often, discomfort in the eyes is accompanied by lacrimation, pain in bright light, hyperemia of the mucous membrane of the eye. The sensation of the presence of a foreign body in the eye occurs in the following situations:
- Ophthalmic diseases : conjunctivitis, blepharitis, dry eye syndrome, glaucoma.
- Hit of small objects : sawdust, grains of sand, insects, metal shavings, etc.
- Eye burns: chemical, thermal, radiation.
- Tumors of the conjunctiva: papillomas, hemangiomas, dermoid cysts.
- Unfavorable climatic conditions : low humidity, high air temperature, strong wind.
Sensation of a foreign body in the throat
It is described by patients as a "lump in the throat", perspiration, compression of the pharynx. Often discomfort is accompanied by hypersalivation, urge to vomit, dysphagia. The sensation of a foreign body in the throat can be associated with a wide range of problems, from mild inflammation to cancer:
- Oropharyngeal infections : viral pharyngitis, tonsillitis, pharyngomycosis.
- Foreign bodies: bones stuck in the throat, unintentionally swallowed small objects, dentures.
- Neoplasms : papillomatosis, fibromas, angiomas, pharyngeal cysts.
- Endocrine diseases : thyroid goiter.
- Neuropsychiatric disorders : stress, neuroses.
Sensation of a foreign body in the anus
Accompanied by a feeling of heaviness, pain in the rectum, urge to defecate. The reasons for the sensation of a foreign body in the anus can be:
- Inflammatory diseases : proctitis, cryptitis, perianal abscess.
- Expansion of hemorrhoidal veins : internal hemorrhoids, prolapsed nodes, thrombosis.
- Foreign bodies : coprolites, enemas tips, foreign objects introduced for the purpose of sexual satisfaction.
- Tumors of the rectum and anal canal : polyps, villous tumors, cancer of the anus.
- Injuries : anal fissure, rectal ruptures, rectal fistulas.
Sensation of a foreign body in the vagina
Most often accompanied by symptoms of vulvovaginitis: leucorrhea, burning, itching, hyperemia of the genital mucosa. The true causes are established during a gynecological examination. Among the factors that cause the sensation of a foreign body in the vagina, there are:
- Inflammatory diseases : bartholinitis, colpitis, mucosal ulcers.
- The introduction of foreign objects into the vagina: accidentally or for the purpose of masturbation.
- Genital prolapse: prolapse and prolapse of the vagina and cervix.
- Genital allergy : to local administration of drugs, spermicides, lubricants, latex condoms.
- Tumors of the vagina: warts, cyst, fibroma, cancer.
- Injuries: ruptures of the perineum and walls of the vagina, scars.
