Chilliness : Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis & Treatment

Last Updated: 04/08/2022

Chilliness is a sign of violation of thermoregulation, which may be accompanied by trophic disorders, vascular diseases, pathology of the peripheral nervous system, endocrinopathies. A person may feel a general chilliness, chilliness of the hands or feet in conditions of normal ambient temperature. To determine the etiological factor of chilliness, electrophysiological (ENMG), radiation (X-ray and CT scan of the spine, angiography), ultrasound (USDG of peripheral vessels) diagnostics are performed. Treatment includes medication, physiotherapy, therapeutic exercises, IRT.

Causes of chilliness

Why does cold hands occur?

The sensation of freezing of the hands, blanching and cooling of the skin, a feeling of numbness of the fingers, which constantly occur under normal conditions, indicate a violation of vascular tone and thermoregulation in the body. Behind the same symptom of chilly hands, various pathological conditions can be hidden:

  • deficiency of vitamins, microelements and nutrients: iron deficiency, folate deficiency, pernicious anemia, low-calorie nutrition;
  • hypothermia and frostbite;
  • peripheral vascular disease: Raynaud's disease, diabetic angiopathy;
  • pathology of peripheral NS: osteochondrosis, VVD, carpal tunnel syndrome;
  • endocrinopathy: hypothyroidism, hypoglycemia.

Why does cold feet occur?

Complaints about the increased sensitivity of the lower extremities to cold may be due to the same diseases as the chilliness of the hands. Additional reasons leading to the fact that a person's legs are constantly chilly can serve as:

  • diseases of the arteries of the lower extremities: obliterating endarteritis, atherosclerosis, Leriche's syndrome;
  • chronic venous insufficiency;
  • violation of blood pressure: arterial hypotension or hypertension;
  • heart failure;
  • polyneuropathy of various origins.
